Artist statement

As an artist, I am fascinated by the interplay of color, light, shapes, and textures. My work attempts to capture these fleeting moments of harmony and serenity. My painting "Blue Hydrangeas 2025" is a conceptual representation of the richness of nature and the quiet joy I found among the vibrant hydrangeas at the Amsterdam flower market.

I worked with acrylic paint on canvas, using brushes for the background, my hands to give the flowers a tangible energy, and palette knives for the foliage and details. The dark burgundy and navy blue background creates a subdued, twilight contrast to the bright light captured by the blue and purple hydrangeas. Each petal is shaped with my fingers to create a sense of depth and a realistic impression. The soft sunlight from the upper left corner brings warmth and life to the composition, while the rounded shapes invite the viewer on a meditative journey through the fine details and the interplay of light and shadow.

This work is a gentle reminder of the abundant nature that brings joy to the everyday. "Blue Hydrangeas 2025" is a reflection of my artistic journey, rooted in attentive observation, unexpected emotions, and a deep gratitude for everyday life.

About the artist

Maria Nikolova lives in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. She was born in Varna, Bulgaria, where she studied at the Academy of Fine Arts, graduating with a Bachelor's degree in Violin and Music Theory. She then spent four years in London, UK, completing her Masters in Theology.

Maria has three adult children. When her youngest son, Filip, was born with Down syndrome, the family moved to Dallas, USA. Maria lived and worked in the United States for eighteen years as a university lecturer and analyst. While working on her dissertation in Educational Leadership, she enrolled in visual arts classes. She took several semesters of painting and drawing at Dallas County College. After completing the painting class, she was the only student invited to exhibit two works—out of the three selected—in a city exhibition. Maria exhibited in several small-scale exhibitions while continuing to paint alongside her work as a business analyst.

Maria Nikolova has lived in Amsterdam with her youngest son since 2023. She currently collaborates with three European galleries that represent her in four countries. She recently won the audience award at a local live painting competition, the "Paint-Off Battle," in Amsterdam. Since January 2025, she has created more than fifty paintings in acrylic and mixed media.

Maria is a passionate and prolific artist who loves color and bold brushstrokes. She firmly believes in her vision that art should evoke deep and vivid emotions. Her collectors share Maria's love of abstract colors and her motto: "Let our walls speak poetry!"
