Collection: Barbara Houwers

Barbara Houwers has been a successful Dutch artist for over 30 years. She became known for her paintings of human figures, often painted in subdued earth tones. The human figure dominates Barbara Houwers' oeuvre. This was already the case in her early autonomous works when she made her debut in the early nineties after her education at the HKU Academy. In her paintings from that period we mainly see stylized and isolated human figures. By combining the human figure with shapes and colors, a life story is created in which emotions and experiences from that life are expressed.

This theme was further developed by adding more human figures to the composition, creating a sense of connection and communication between the figures. These works evoke a strong sense of recognition in the viewer. Houwers' technique broadened from traditional painting to a more experimental use of her material.

More recently, she has created three-dimensional works and objects, designed using 3D printing technology. This seems like a major departure in style, but as with many artists, it is actually a logical development of Houwers' basic forms. Barbara's works can be found in both private and corporate collections and public buildings.
